The tourist vehicles are seriously congesting the regions. The parking space is at a premium, leading to traffic snarls and inconvenience for locals and tourists alike. So far, the places are unable to accommodate the number of rising vehicles. Limited space means parking lots and hotels can only accommodate as high as 4000 vehicles.
The worst, however, are the peak tourist seasons, when this capacity is easily surpassed, causing enormous traffic congestion and further worsening the situation. A rise in visitors, particularly during holidays and weekends, has played havoc with Nainital's existing infrastructure, with parking often spilling over into the narrow streets and residential areas.
To save the region from this mess, the district administration has been looking for alternative solutions. Space is being pursued in areas close to Ranibagh and Kathgodam to construct parking facilities. It would add another parking facility across this region which would park 2,500 more vehicles.
