Gorakhpur’s Airport Expansion to Support 24-Hour Flights and Growth

"Airplanes will be able to fly 24 hours a day from the new airport in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. This facility will increase the number of flights. Till now, the permission for flights at the Gorakhpur airport connected to the Air Force is only till 9 pm".
 

A significant thrust is being given to Gorakhpur with a new airport coming up on 42 acres in Nandanagar. This would facilitate 24x7 flights operating from this airport, thereby ensuring for the first time in its history, that air travel could now happen uninterruptedly for 24 hours in Gorakhpur. Till date, flights used to operate till 9 pm since the airport was an Air Force station. The number of flights that took place till then were relatively less. But with the new airport, the scene would change, and the number of flights would increase manifold compared.

Stiff Competition with the other major airports like Lucknow and Varanasi.

With the rise of this new airport, Gorakhpur Airport is likely to compete with big, established airports like Lucknow and Varanasi in the near future. The new facility will be a multi-terminals one, so passengers will get better amenities. The present airport functions with just one terminal. But the new structure will work along the same lines as major airports like Mumbai and Delhi have multiple terminals. It will, therefore introduce more passengers.

In addition to this, the distance between the city center and the airport would be reduced by one kilometer that is operational, therefore more accessible. There will be a four-lane road developed from Nandanagar Chowki to the airport, making the flow of traffic easier for passengers to reach the airport comfortably and quickly.
Expansion Plans in Action

The airport will see an increase in the number of aircraft soon, said Gorakhpur Airport Director Anil Kumar Dwivedi; but that is not all. Now, the number of passengers ferryable by the airport will be more than what it could ferry hitherto. It is part of the expansion that the airport would now start direct flight services to a large number of cities.
With the budget approval of the extension work for the airport, the required detailed plans are being finalized at present. In this new airport, 10 aircraft can be parked simultaneously. The airport is extended in three directions to ensure smooth operation, and it will also accommodate 1,500 passengers for check-in or check-out at one time which will prove to be a crucial hub for northern Uttar Pradesh air traffic network.

The major project will ensure connectivity, improve regional development, and position Gorakhpur as the prime player of Uttar Pradesh in the aviation sector.
