Mumbai to Get Mega Connectivity Upgrade with Seven New Ring Roads in the Next 5 Years

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is to undertake the extensive work in this metropolis, for the construction of seven ring roads. Estimated cost is about INR 58,517 crores. It will also save travel time in a big way and provide connectivity with existing metro systems, bridges, and flyovers. For this massive overhaul of infrastructure, the total investment is pegged at Rs 3 lakh crore.

The ring road project stretches close to 90.20 kilometers and will strengthen connectivity from the Gujarat border near Vadodara to Alibaug. The entire project is expected to eliminate notorious traffic congestion in the city, and traveling may become very easy by 2029.
MMRDA master plans include a vast network of roads, bridges, tunnels, and flyovers that are designed to shape the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The thrust will be to enhance East-West connectivity, which has been an age-old issue of both Mumbai's citizenry and the tourist visiting the city.

NITI Aayog states that these developments are expected to place a big impact on the economy of the city. It estimates the city's GDP to rise from USD 140 billion to USD 300 billion in 2030.

The Seven New Ring Roads

1. First Ring Road :

Location:
This road From Nariman Point, this road takes you onto the Bandra-Worli Sea Link that incorporates the Sewri-Worli Connector. And goes via the Eastern Freeway and the Orange Gate Tunnel to loop back to Nariman Point

2. Second Ring Road: 

Location:
From Nariman Point, also begins with roads that connect to the major intersections such as Santacruz and Chembur, thus connecting through the Coastal Road and the Eastern Freeway.

3. Third Ring Road: 

Location:
Connecting Nariman Point to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, the road is stretched to the Powai-Kanjurmarg junction and merges with the Eastern Freeway, returning via the Orange Gate Tunnel.

4. Fourth Ring Road:

Location:
It links Nariman Point to the Versova-Bandra Sea Link, looped through Thane, and then returns back to South Mumbai.

5. Fifth Ring Road:

Location
This long road is to connect Nariman Point with the Versova-Dahisar Link Road and extend beyond Thane and Bhayander and take access to the northern suburbs on a higher level.

6. Sixth Outer Ring Road

Location
Connecting Mumbai to the Alibaug-Virar Corridor, this road will improve smooth passage between these regions with a coastal road cutting across Thane.

7. Seventh Ring Road

Location
The Nariman Point road will serve to connect with the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway, proposed to be the key freight commercial road.

Infrastructure of Mumbai Future 

Our idea is to decrease travel time across the city to an hour, said MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee. New roads and tunnels are not only beneficial to reducing congestion but are also well considered to be drivers of economic growth. The involvement of MMRDA, BMC, and MSRDC would sure bring in swift commutes and better logistics in Mumbai.
