Seven Iconic Temples in Assam will Soon be Connected Via Waterways In The Brahmaputra

Recently, the Assam government has received approval from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways to develop 10 waterway projects connecting these fabled temples. The waterways will be run on a "Hop on & Hop off" model where tourists can visit multiple destinations without any hassle. The investment in this project is approximately INR 645.56 crore, and it has been approved by the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.

Kamakhya Temple is located atop Nilachal Hill in Guwahati. One of the most revered Shakti Peethas in India, This Temple is dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya, is renowned worldwide for its unique celebration of the symbolic menstruation cycle of the goddess, emphasizing the sanctity of fertility and feminine power through the Ambubachi Mela, which is an annual festival. Apart from the religious significance, the temple has architectural brilliance, and visiting this place provides a soothing ambiance of devotion, history, and stunning views of the Brahmaputra River.

The Umananda Temple is a world-famous shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated at the marvelous Peacock Island. The voyage to it is as serene and idyllic as the waters in which the island floats-boat journeys are the sole means to reach this exclusive abode.
The temple is an ancient edifice built under the legend of Ahom King Gadadhar Singha in the 17th century. It is believed that Lord Shiva meditated at this sacred site and was therefore regarded as sacred to the people.

The project includes construction of:
12 floating terminals
Two multimodal terminals at Pandu and Jogighopa
Two permanent terminals at Bogibeel and Dhubri
The Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance has approved the plan, marking a major stride in using Assam's waterways for tourism purposes.
